Question on filters and step up rings

I'm thinking of getting a graduated ND filter, square Conkin type. In order to save money, I thought I would buy something to fit my widest lens (77 mm thread) and then use a step-up ring to fit it to my 67mm thread lenses. Are there any gotchas or problems with this approach?

Thanks,

    You somewhat mixed two methods.
    Basically there are 2 ways:
Cokin filter holder, square filter and adapters to fit your actual lens/es
    or
standard round filter for example 77mm or 82mm or 86mm and
    one or few step-up rings.

Both ways are good, you must just decide which way fit you better.

    Thanks,
No problems. But why not just get a 67mm Cokin adapter ring for your 67mm filter ring lenses. They are not all that expensive. BTW, the ring is removable from the filter holder, so you can have many different size rings and one holder. Understand?

Thanks z and Seymore. I didn't realize that the frame could have multiple thingies for different sized lenses. thumb.gif

The Cokin adapter plates for various diameter filter threads are shallower than standard filter adapter rings too, which helps keep the Cokin filter closer to the front surface of the lens.

This MAY help prevent vignetting also with wider angle lenses.

I keep several with a Cokin filter holder in a plastic sandwich bag.
