This is a marvelous B&W conversion. I really like it.
Wow, that's a hard one to crop while "still following the rules" - so you broke "the rules". Good on you. My first impression was that it was a bit centered, but you needed the room at the top to get in bayonet into the shot. You also couldn't get it all in there as that would push the soldier's face all the way to the bottom of the image.
The grooves in the wall - I keep trying to figure out what happens to them.
