This is my first real attempt at a pano. It's been long enough now that I don't remember if the left side was just dark like that due to cloud cover or if there's a problem with my exposures from that side, etc etc. Basically, I'm looking for advice on how to make this better.

Thanks for lookin'.

I would guess that the sun was pretty close to your left edge and that the darkness on teh left is from shadows from clouds or a hill. But that's just a guess. As for improving the shot, I'm not sure there is enough interest on teh left side of the frame, at least at this size. I think the far mountains are too far away and too dark to be of interest. This is from the back of the lodge isn't it?

Nick, this is a pano of Chief Mountain, but it is a little distorted to my eye. I haven't looked at my pano frames yet. I can see that I need to get cracking!

I would think the left side can be opened up a little with Shadow/Highlights on an adjustment layer with a mask, or just use a soft brush with white in the Soft Light mode might work also.

Nikolai - I'll put one up on my server tonight, this is Smugmug's large image.

Nick - I see what you mean about lack of interest on the left, I just really liked the clouds over there :) And this is from St. Mary's. I don't remember how far back from the lodge we were, but yes, the lodge was some distance further to the left of the pano (which is almost 180º).

Jim - Not Chief Mt, I haven't done that pano yet :) Not familiar with the Soft Light mode... (Just started using PS3 ... well really PS yesterday) I'll play around with it, thanks for the advice!

I agree that it looks so much better when it's bigger. Panos are tough to link here, but I'd suggest finding a not-so-wide crop of it maybe to post? I really liked the details you caught in the mountains in the middle. Slingshot Mountain (the butte on the right) is "meh." IMO :D Perhaps a good chunk of the left frame can go poof?

I'm glad you finally started listening to my raves about masking.... though it took meeting Marc to convince you! lol3.gif

With panos I usually resize them myself to 800 or 600 tall, 72 ppi and upload them in a private folder with enabled originals, so I can link them easily. deal.gif

ETA: Took off some from both the left and the right. A little bit better, but still....

    Travis,
thank you, but I meant: just post a link, like this:
    http://tenminutesout.smugmug.com/photos/206108905-O.jpg
otherwise it screwes up the whole dgrin page..
    Much better now!
