Hey!

Just thinking about a flash, so far the Metz 58 AF-1 and the Sigma 530 Super are my options. Anyone here know of any recent reviews of the sigma? or have tried it themselves?

The Sigma EF-530 DG Super E-TTL is such a new item, even Amazon only has one review, but they rate the flash at 5 stars.

The Sigma EF-500 DG Super E-TTL is still available and I have two of them. FWIW, the major change appears to be light output with the 530 rated at GN132@ISO100 and standard lens (50mm lens on a FF 35mm camera) and the 500 series is rated at GN120.

I would rate the Sigma EF-500 DG Super E-TTL and "any" of the Canon EX series flashes as more faithful at Canon E-TTL II technology than the Metz units which many users seem to have problems with. Metz users tend to recommend using the "auto" mode of operation rather than the E-TTL modules.

Bottom line, the Canon 580EX II Speedlite E-TTL II is the most versatile, toughest and easiest to use of all the flashes I mentioned. I do believe that the Sigma units are a tremendous value. I could recommend either the Canon or Sigma units.

    (Blushing a little.)

I've been in photography for over 45 years (I'm pretty old.) I was either the secondary or principal photographer for my employer for 31 years, using large format and 35mm film equipment first, and then digital starting in 1995. (Product, portrait and documentary photography.) I also was the "mostly-stay-at-home" parent while my children were growing up, and photography was something I could do at home or take them with me.

I own Canon dSLRs and a Minolta digicam and Fuji P&S (F30). My father owns Nikon and I have a pretty good friend with Pentax. I do a lot of research to support my stable of equipment and theirs.

While we're at it, I envy you, because you are not me! thumb.gifthumb Much of my life has not been that enviable.

    Thanks for the compliment anyway!

Thanks for the tip! I guess I'll go for the 530 super or the good old 500 super then.. :) The prices on the 500 has dropped a little after the 530 came out, so my guess is that I can get a fair deal there! Thanks again!
