Hawk With Autumn Colors
Haven't been shooting for weeks. Too many ugly home projects in the way! :huh But last Sunday while loading my nephew's truck with junk to be hauled, this gorgeous hawk landed in the tree right across from my condo. They fly through here all the time, sort of like the Blue Angels....you just barely manage to see them they are so fast. I have never seen one land here. My long lens was upstairs on the 20D - I didn't think he'd hang around long enough to capture, but he did. Unfortunately my new 40 D was in the car with a short lens. He was quite interested in what we were all doing and hung around watching for a while. We don't get much in the way of Fall colors in California, so this will have to qualify as my shot for this season! I believe it is a Red Tail, but I'm not sure. He was pretty big, somewhat bigger than a crow. These were taken full-frame with the 300 f/4.0 and a 1.4x tele.

Cheers,
Thanks Glen! Nice to have a 'clue' (white bibs) about identifying hawks. When I think it's a Cooper, it turns out to be a RedTail and vice versa. Thusie sets me straight on the id!!! It was hard to tell in the light, I really could only see his coloring after processing.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
