Confusing CNAME question

I hope I can lay this question out clearly?

Right now, my registered domain of Choicephotos.net is my smugmug account name. My go daddy (where I registered that doman) has a CNAME account that's set up to go to my smugmug site when choicephotos.net is typed in the address bar.

I'm now changing my choicephotos.net completely. Let's assume the new domain I registered is dog.com (for simplicity sake here).

Do I........

Do I setup a CNAME account at the place I registered dog.com and have it point to choicephotos.net or, do / can I change my account name at smugmug to dog.com and have it point to dog.com directly?

And / or should I be pointing to dog.smugmug.com ? instead of dog.com?

I assume I also have to wait to change my account name on smugmug (if that can be done) until the CNAME is up and working?

Thanks a bunch for your help, it's been a while since I set this sort of thing up on Smugmug.

Wrong forum, I'm moving to Pro Sales Support :D

You can only have one CNAME pointing to your SmugMug Account - but, some folks have had success having "dog.com" forward to choicephotos.net which then goes to Smug. Or vice-versa.

I'll ask one of our Support Heroes to step in and explain how, look for the answer Monday.

    Thanks, Andy!

    Most important to me:

right now my smugmug account domain is choicephotos.net which is hosted on Godaddy... I setup CNAME there to point to choicephotos.smugmug.com

However, since I have this NEW domain name: princeofpaws.com I'm wondering if I can change the domain name in my smugmug settings to princeofpaws.com and have the company I registered this domain with, point to princeofpaws.smugmug.com

    1. In otherwords: can I change my domain name on smugmug to princeofpaws.com ?

Because if I can, that's going to change where I point to in the CNAME record I set up at the hosting company (in this case, bluehost.com)

Thanks in advance, Andy! Hope all is well with you?

    Andy, any word on this?
Hi, Andy. Thank you for contacting me and telling me someone would be in contact with me on Monday (today).

    Any word on this yet?

    Thanks, Andy!

Yup - set up a CNAME for your new domain. Then go to your Smug control panel and change the domain there, too. Only one can be active, so choice photos won't work anymore (to SmugMug) when you make this change.

    What happens if?
Ok, I got it.... wait for the CNAME to go through. I have it ordered / setup on the site where I registered princeofpaws.com

Then, and ONLY then I'll change my smugmug domain to princeofpaws.com

Question: what would have happened if I had changed the smugmug domain name to princeofpaws.com BEFORE the CNAME had been propigated?

Another question: once I change my domain name on Smugmug to priceofpaws.com, will I be able to use my same login and password as when it was Choicephotos.net ?

Thank you, Andy.... you're the best!
