Here's what you do. when the skyline changes due to a new building, fallen building, fire, whatever....run out and copyright it! The lease the rights back to the city for millions!
Amazing what governments are doing these days to generate revenue, which this seems to be a case of. Here in Austin there has been a lot of new road construction. They tried to make a lot of it toll roads. I have no problem with toll roads in principle. But when they try to take a road already built and turn it into a toll road, or a road that was already funded by voters giving the nod for bonds to build a FREE road, then people get pretty pissed.
Here in Austin it was relatively easy to get press coverage due to the fact it directly impacted the pocket books of the people. In Chicago it might be hard to fight that. It doesn't stop people from taking their own pics, just restricts others from taking pics to sell, which is a much smaller percentage.
This doesn't bode well, but in a day when people don't mind stealing music, I'm pessimistic that Chicago can be convinced to change its mind.
I thought i read a few years ago that the cypress trees at Pebble Beach have been copyright protected. Nothing would suprise after hearing that the H/Davidson sound is or about to be copyrighted.

Well its like a group of long distance runners on their last lap as they arrive in the stadium & each one is waiting for the other to lift the pace & then one make the lunge & the others take off in a mad panic chase ..............

BTW, it's not the skyline they're copyrighting, its the Millenium Park, and in particular a sculpture titled Cloud Gate (also called the Bean.)
