I photograph running events. I am interesting understanding the ways that are available to contacts runners for marketing. I think there are some programs out there. Anyone want to educate me, please? Dick Ross

    Dick,
You may want to do a search on a Peter Wolf. This nut, (disclaimer: opinion only, not backed by mental health practitioners, at least that I have personal knowledge of), claims to hold a patent for doing this very thing.

His next patent will cover moving air in and out of the human body through use of a muscular, skeletal system.

I have heard about Mr. Wolf and I think that I understand that if I rename the photos to correspond to the bib number and do not employ a search but allow the searcher to use the numberical order of the files, then I am safe.

My biggest interest in buying or developing a way to use registration information to contact the runners. Any ideas for that, please? (thanks for the note)

Contact the promoter prior to each event you photographs and ask for permission. See if you can be the "event photographer" and if allowed, see if they will allow you to include a flyer in the races packet or add your website to theirs when the post the race results...or send an email to the racers, etc. Pretty much you need to work with the promoter at each event.

That was my first thought on reading the thread title. :D That patent needs to be reined in. I think a lot of us here share the "that nut" assessment. In any case, anyone doing this sort of event photography really needs to tread very carefully right now.

There is a thread http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=26266 and some interesting info regarding a lawsuit in which smugmug is a defendant.
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me
