Cropping Settings question

I realize that the answer probably varies depending on what you are cropping and just how much you are taking off, but in general, what do you guys use (setting) when cropping. Do you set the crop tool to an inch size? Do you determine it by pixels? What do you think is the best way (in a general sense) to crop your pictures? Any comments appreciated. Thanks.
