Shooting all kind of photos shall I get a 40D or a 5D ?

As I own a 20D - and a 350D to sell - I would keep the 20 D for sports and the 5D for the other kind of pictures.

This way I would have a real 16mm !:D

I own 3 Canon lenses all L kind.:D

It sounds like you really have your heart set on the 5D.

There are rumors that the 5D replacement is close at hand. If you could wait a bit, you might see something you like. Then again, 5D prices have dropped the last month or so, so now may be a good time to buy. ne_nau.gif

That full frame sure does sound good but the 6.5 FPS on the 40D sounds great also. Would be good for action shots. I would say the 5D would be better for landscape shooting. I would be happy with either one.

Which is why I sold my 300D. And got the 5D. And why 2 years later I am looking to get the 40D as an additional camera, not to replace my 5D.

Maybe they should make a 5D-40D zoom sensor, to go with my 70-200 L eek7.gif

They are both great cameras, Antonio.

The 5D is better for use with wide angles and landscapes, or course, and the 40D will be better for sports and wildlife. Take your pick.

That is basically how I decide which to take with me for the day. The fill flash on the 40D can be real handy too.

That's called a 1Ds Mark III. At 1.4 crop you still get 10MP.

The choice between the 5D and the 40D is a hard one. If you like wide angles or wide aperatures, the 5D is going to give you better image quality. However, if you like telephoto or rapid fire shooting the 40D is superior.

For myself, I am addicted to the look of fast primes on the full frame sensor. It a unforgiving but very rewarding style of shooting.

My dilema is not that small.
The sugestion of getting both is very wise, but ... you know ... $$$ €€€ :D
In Portugal the equipment is very expensive.
In Canada or the States the prices are better and the dollar is low regarding the Euro what is an advantage for me.
May be, just may be, I have someone who could be able to bring me a body from Canada before Christmas time.
This would be a good issue in terms of money.

About the choice: I don't know yet.
I want to go to the shop and look throught both.
I was told and I have been reading that the 5D has a beautifull viewfinder and that is important for me.
The handing is also important. And... the pleasure I feel when I get the camera on my hands on as well. :D

Some days a go I was in a situation where there was a great quantity of light all around and I could not see - I repeat I could not see - the speed and the aperture on the 350 and I hardly could at the 20.
I have even thought that the problem was with my eye but no, it was not.

    40D = $1500
    1Ds Mk III = $8000 eek7.gif

well I think there is some confusion about the cameras... not like it matters in this conversation but I figured I would point it out...

The 1Ds Mark III is around 8000, its full frame, and its 21.1 Megapixels - stock photo, modelling, etc.
The 1D Mark III is around, 4500, its got a 1.3x sensor, and is 10.1 mega pixels - sports body

I was a bit confused at first but what LiquidAir was pointing out is that if you take a crop out of an image from the Canon 1Ds MKIII, at a crop of 1.4 you still have 10 MPix remaining. In effect, you can "digital zoom" (yech, I hate that phrase) with that camera to some degree.

I was playing with a 40D and 5D the other day also. The 40D made me REALLY want to grab my checkbook. Felt great in my hands. It's a nice sturdy piece of equipment. It's FAST! And the 3 inch lcd is BEAUTIFUL!

I have no doubts about all those arguments.thumb.gif

But I am almost decided by the 5D, and some reasons are:

    1. full size sensor with supperb image quality.
    2. # mm is realy # mm and not # *1.6 mm
    3. I like wide angles a lot. 16mm is more dramatic than 16*1.6 = 25.6 mm and I have the 16-35 L lens.
    4. very flexible/versatile camera with the 24-105mm if the camera is bought with it and this makes this combo an all around equipement.
    5. I like to shoot landscapes a lot
    6. I keep the 20D for sports with the 70-200
    7. I don't care if it is "old". After all, it's only 2/2.5 years old ...
    8. The price is very inviting. Until the end of the year it will go down a bit more I hope
    9. The new 5D will come at a very hight price.
    10. All my lenses are L
    11. For what I have been reading, the viewfinder is supperb to look throught

    What else ? ...ne_nau.gif

But I must buy the camera in the States or in Canada. Hope to do so.:D
Are you coming to Lisbon till the end of the year ?ne_nau.gif

I haven't found so far any promotional packs in Europe.

Of course with flash and ST-E2 ! rolleyes1.gif
A friend of mines, who was shooting with me, was holding the flash, which was in fact inserted in the hot shoe of his 400 D.
It worked fine until the camera went to sleep.

Then he touched the shutter button to wake it and the flash was working from my ST-E2.

Meanwhile, I was holding another flash with my left hand hight above.
Can you decode the lights ?

I also have a 5D and will keep on using it till it stops working. This is one camera I will never sell. The L lenses is something you really need on that body.
