I was asked to do a photo shoot while on vacation so I did not have any lighting gear with me other then my flash. I shot this in a pich black shead at like 11:00 @ nite let me know what you think and how I could of done it better. I know the pose is not the best but I really could not see him it was that dark.

This isnt the WP... but..... headscratch.gif

Whats the focal point? His chest? Why this angle? Thats a tough one to pull off and its not flattering to your subject at all.

Whats the point of the shot or the shoot in general? Was it for a specific purpose? Were you shooting in pitch black conditions for any reason?

I just dont get the shot and what you were trying to accomplish. Maybe you could elaborate for us, that may help.

    Thanks
Disclaimer: Just because I have an opinion, that doesnt mean I'm right.

Well the focal point was where ever it would get a focus I wanted more on the face but that was not achieved. it was just to dark.

The Idea for the dark shed I was hoping to get more use of the white inside walls for bouncing the light to use as fill like I said it was a impromptu shoot . the perpose is for a album cover for his first solo album.

My though (which if can not be gotten from the photo I need to do better) was to show the building years in a Raw form from the inside out hence the black out side agents the window. ne_nau.gif

    Now that you explain it...
....I kindof get it. But to be honest I think a reshoot would be a good idea.
Poor guy, you can see right up his nostrils. Maybe a shot with some construction gear or something. Ask yourself if your photo would make YOU buy the album, and then shoot and reshoot until you get there.

Next time try to make your photo when you have more control over the situation.

If you had a flash, how could you not focus wherever you wanted? An external flash would emit a faint light to help the camera focus, and an onboard one would as well.

with my current flash and camera setup the on flash light does not work and with the on camera one it was just struggling that bad. it would only lock on once in about every 25-30 tries.
Heatherfeather I know the nostril thing really is bothering me too his head needed to be turned more to the left. like I said the pose needed to be a little better.
Shane422 I am only about 75mi away from Ankeny.

Thanks for all the suggestions, points, and help

Why cause yourself any unnecessary headaches shooting "in" a barn at 11:00pm at night, with no off camera flash or strobes?

Depending on what else you got, I would reshoot, especially if you got paid to do the shoot. Problems I see:
    • The camera actually focused on his abdomen
    • Which threw his face OOF
    • Shadow cast on the right wall
    • Window/grating above his head - not flattering
This is more than just a bit under-exposed - or at least it can use some levels/curves adjustment to lighten it just a bit. The photo will also benefit from a proper setting of both the white and black points.

I don't think it is just the nostril journey that is off-putting.. low angle shots of 'well built' people are never flattering.

I just have not figured out how to make shooting against a white wall flattering. ne_nau.gif They are ok but the mostly like like snap shots to me. I really needed more light with me but as I said I was on vacation and asked if I would do this. I have offered a re-shoot but he is content with what is in the gallery so far
I do agree with most every thing all of you have pointed out on this photo thanks for taking the time to look it over and point some of these things out
