Having a seven month old son I think I can chime in here. First and foremost, consider a 365 day project...I am doing one for my son. It started off as a picture a day for the inlaws who are on the other side of the country...I am glad I started this because it is amazing to watch the growth, and friends and colleagures have been watching and waiting for the next picture.

When they are newborns...capture the details!!! Hand, feet, etc...I got some of my best shots capturing my sons hands and feet in the dark with a an off camera flash triggered by cheap eBay triggers and remotes.

Make sure you find a great spot in your home with good natural light. My wife and I are fortunate that our bedroom gets hit with wonderful light in the morning. My Canon 85MM 1.8 get quite a workout in the AM.

Always have your camera on hand when you are out and about with your infant...you never know if you will run into a politician who is ready, willing and able for a photo op...

*Note - I ran into Giada Delaurentis (Everyday Italian on Food TV) yesterday in the Apple Store in Santa Monica. I had met her before two years ago and she remembered. I had my son with me and asked if she wouldn't mind holdng him for a picture for this project...she pointed to the left hand which contained a tissue...she siad she was sick...oh well!

The last bit of advice I can offer you...make sure you accompany your wife and child on all pediatrican visits...I get some of my best shots in the doctors office using off camera flash combined with nice bright walls and good overhead flourescent lighting. I am acutally in the midst of working out a deal where I use our doctors office on weekends for shoots of my clinets kids....

You can always shoot in B&W, with these shots I used window light

Use your imagination and use high/low key lighting

I use window light only and it works great. Also I always tell the parents to keep the house warm and have white noise....that can make a huge difference =)
