The ablity to shoot wireless ETTL should not be overlooked - it is a very cool thing to do.
He is using a 550ex as a master trigger but a fill flight, to fire an off camera 550ex as a slave, but a main light. As he says, the ST-E2 can be used as the main transmitter/controller also.
Today the strobe to use, would be the 580ex or 580ex II
One of the techniques he discussed is lighting a room with one or two EOS speedlites bounced off the ceiling, and then shooting away. I discussed the same topic here

Before this article, I hadn't really twigged that the 550/580/430 had this wireless triggering built-in. It really made me want to go buy a flash or two and get into it.
Chuck Gardner is very passionate (understatement) about using the multiple Canon EX flashes. He makes many good points and you could do worse than reading his tutorials on using Canon flashes for portraiture. They using diagraming to show how each multiple flash technique works and then photos to show how it looks.

Chuck also does a great job not only explaining all the hardware info about how Canon decided to make things "backwards" than the norm (ratios), but also about the use with on-camera fill, off camera main.
Great stuff...I've had very good success using his methods.
