SmugSaver

Hi.

I have just put up a pre-release version of a screensaver for SmugMug people called SmugSaver.

You can find it at http://www.garethlewin.com/smugsaver

Please note that this is a pre-release version. It might be buggy! There is very little documentation, although it should be pretty simple.

There are a lot of extra ideas/features I had for this, but want to see what people think of it / ask for first. I also want to make sure I get a proper release out before the 31st.

Right now the screensaver is windows only. I wrote it in .NET to save me some time. If there is any real demand I'll look at rewriting it for the mac.

I had to post a new version, found that if you get albums with nickname, obviously the password field is not set.

But I did find that the passwordhint is set, even if it is just an empty string, so I am filtering on that.

download link on http://www.garethlewin.com/smugmug/ is busted.

What platform is this anyway? I've never seen a "msi" file... so I'm guessing it's some proprietary windows thing?

msi files are Microsoft Install Modules.

Not much different than dmg files for mac.

The reason the download link is broken is because you didn't follow my link, you went to /smugmug not /smugsaver

(And I made the same mistake at some stage, so I uploaded a bad .php file to /smugmug)

yeah just read up on them... kinda different... looks more like a package than a dmg. But point is... windows software, not much use to me. ne_nau.gif

Just installed it on my XP machine and it works perfectly.

I love how it selects an appropriate color mat for each picture.

    Thanks Much, clap.gif

I've been using it for over a week now, and really like it.

Is it downloading a image each time, or does it cache the images on the hard drive after it has downloaded them once?

Is it grabbing the original image, or a custom size to fit the screen resolution?

Thanks, sorry have been super busy + on trip to Vegas so didn't keep track.

It downloads each time. I will add a cache. I had one but it didn't delete old files so it got big and I didn't want to ship that way.

It grabs "large" (or medium if you limit it to that) files and scales them. I thought of getting custom sizes, but even on my 24" large seemed good enough, do you want me to change that?

Thanks, yes I was thinking of that, a way to custom tailor it to a specific gallery, I'll look into that too.

Does anyone have any other feature requests?

I was thinking of showing descriptions, is that useful to anyone?

I thought if you had it go through all the albums on an account it might be nice to show which album it's currently displaying an image from.

On most of my images I don't have actualy descriptions, it just has the file name, so descriptions wouldn't be a benefit for me... yet, but it's a nice option to have. If you could turn it on and off I think it would be cool.
