I gave it my best shot but the only one around was up a tree
Herons are always welcome here. Harry has posted a bunch, and I have posted a few also. But sometimes they are not terribly cooperative subjects - at least yours did not launch and fly away quickly.
As a gentle suggestion for improvement - a little fill-flash might have dressed up this back-lit image up a tad and brought out the colors of the bird in a more favorable light. Ya think? :
I think the bird is good just like he is. The one I "have" that flies to trees flies to a tree where he is much smaller than that and the tree is much bigger. I have lots of pictures. And it amazes me how herons fit into their environment. Not like an egret. I used to miss seeing herons they were so well camoflaged.
Since I have been there, and couldn't do that. I really like it. Fill would just be a different shot, IMO. Both good.
Path and Ginger
Thanks Ginger you and I share the want a shot but no help from the birds ,but with respect path is right it,s to blue [or with my inexperience]thats what i see.Your last group Ginger was very nice .I did get some shots that look good but i can only use them as postage stamps .thanks for the look and comment Path you did give me an idea tho and a ? do you think that the flash on the camera D70 would have worked [maybe 60 fet] : JEFF

Hey Jeff,
I'm seeing definite improvement in your last few bird shots. Excellent perspective on this shot. The heron is a tad underexposed.

I agree with Harry and PF. He's a little under exposed and a fill would have helped this problem. Either that, or dial in some +EV comp and live with a lighter (possibly blown out) sky. I dunno about the D70's internal flash working at 60 feet. I'd figure it should work OK as a fill up to at least 30-40 feet though.
