I really wish Canon incorporated these into the 30Ds. It would have been nice.
On that note, does anyonw know where I could find that attachment? I heard you can buy it online: to have gridlines in the viewfinder.

Yes, it is actually an easy exchange you can do yourself, but you need to be careful and sure of yourself with an ability to work carefully in small, tight spaces (almost a jeweler, but not quite). They include instructions. You might look at their 20D instruction sheet, which is very similar to the 30D. http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/files/KERR-20D.PDF

I don't recall if this trick was in their instructions or not, but I cut a heavy piece of paper to lay over the mirror to protect it. When the inevitable brush against it happened it was a non-event.

"The Ef-series focusing screens are interchangeable focusing
Standard Precision Matte, Ef-D Precision Matte with Grid, and Ef-S
Super Precision Matte to make it easy to see the point of focus.
The optical characteristics of the Ef-A and Ef-D focusing screens
are the same as the Ee-A and Ee-D focusing screens. The optical
characteristics of the Ef-S focusing screen are the same as the
Ec/Ee-S focusing screens. The focusing screen can be installed in
the same way as previous focusing screens. However, to make
them easier to install, a dedicated tool has been newly developed.
The tool case is the same as the one for Ec/Ee focusing screens
and has a paper partition matching the Ef-series focusing screen.
The Ef-series focusing screens are smaller than the old focusing
screens. The new installation tool is longer than the old one with the lever more toward

Here is a link to what the grid line focus screen Canon makes for the 40D looks like. I like how theyve left the lines out in the middle to keep the view in that area clear:
