Salmon (not so good shots)

I was lucky enough to witness salmon leaping up a waterfall in Scotland yesterday morning. Alas, the pictures aren't so great, and I would welcome advice on what I should have been doing, so that I can get it right next time. Faster shutter speed...? Tripod...?

This next one landed pretty much at my feet before falling back down. It wasn't that uncommon to see them hitting the rocks.

Here's two for the price of one. :D

And finally, to give you an idea of scale... this was the only other person present throughout the time we were there. He is a professional nature photographer.

Wow, very cool! I had no idea there were leaping salmon in Scotland, but I don't see why not. I wonder if this is an activity that could be done on the Scotland workshop? lol3.gif

That pro photographer that was there that day probably could give some useful advice... not like me. ;)

You may not think these are your greatest shots, but you sure get points for being out there. Way to go.

Like Schmoo, I didn't know there is Salmon in Scotland. Very cool that
you have these fish in your waters. thumb.gif

Do you have gear similar to what he is using or something different?

Just looking at the "Pro" shooters gear pretty much solves the how to's of
getting shots like the ones your going for here. At least what to take
anyway. :D Also notice he is using a handheld shutter release.

Check out this thread and see if helps at all.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

And yeah, you get Atlantic salmon in Scotland. As you may know, they always go up the same river they were born in to spawn.

As for my equipment... no, I don't have the same at all. I am just on a Canon G5 at the moment. I have been resisting the temptation to go the whole hog with a digital SLR simply because I don't currently find as much time as I would like, and feel I wouldn't yet do it justice. Maybe I should just bite the bullet. :)
