Assignment #57: Duotone Portrait

edited February 29, 2008 in Assignments
Let's make it simple again: I't gotta be a portrait, and it's gotta be a duotone.
There is a catch, though: no black-and-white and no "sepia" are allowed. :deal
Each entry should consist of two images: one original color one (SOOC jpeg or very basic conversion from RAW) and one post-processed into a duotone.
As always, images should be fresh.

Let's get some nice duotone portrait!

So, Nik, explain how fresh is fresh? I have a shot from Wednesday that I haven't converted yet, that I might like to try this with.

Well, in our class "fresh" means you learn about the assignment first and then shoot with it in mind. The idea is to give people incentive to go out and shoot, not to go through the archives.

You can try to use your Wednesday results, but please be aware there will be no prize for that... Wait a sec... We don't have prizes anyway lol3.gif

So, why don't you start with what you have already, and then maybe shoot more and post the really fresh one? mwink.gif

This is not black and white

    Thank you!

Now, apart from shifting the Hue slider away from it's default brownish position, how would you justify this particular hue for this particular shot?

Please rememeber: we don't do this just to comply with my (or somebody else's :-) silly rules. We want to improve our skills and vision while staying withing certain parameters.

So, with that in mind: why pinkinsh/purple? headscratch.gif

Izzy, that is not duotone, it's selective color! deal.gif

A duotone is a black and white image to which another color is added. In PS you first convert an image to grayscale , then to duotone (Mode>Duotone), where you can select the 2nd color and the blend. thumb.gif

Hey David, tell me if I'm wrong:

This is how I did it:

    Mode-greyscale
    mode-duotone
load: /presets/duotones/duotones/etc. and chose one. i'll post a B&W Image for comparison.

Is that how you get duotone?

Haha thanks a ton. I had to chase her around for a while before she settled down and I could get a few shots. then she got bored and spread herself on the floor for the pic.

They are. I converted greyscale image to duotone. then I pasted a layer of the full color image underneath the new duotone image, masked the duotone image and just poked holes in the eyes so the color image showed up.

Not sure If it'll be acceptable to Nik ne_nau.gif But I can just take off the eyes then. Would it qualify without the color in the eyes?

I used the same steps (I think!) as David, but when I try to save it I can only save it as a PSD file.....what did I do wrong? headscratch.gif

P.S. sorry.........used the duotone that Izzy used but converted to grayscale first.....

Thank you for the entry! thumb.gif
It's a duotone alright, but I'm having a really hard time calling this image "a portrait"... mwink.gif

Yes, about 2:45am it dawned on me that I got caught up in learning the process and forgot it should be a portrait headscratch.gif duh, .....back to the drawing board. Sounds like you think the process is proper....now I just have to find a face!

First assignment I'm participating in. What a great way to learn more techniques. I've never done this before so I took some older images of two of our dogs to practice with (will get a "new" portrait tomorrow to submit for the record. Here are the first attempts. I don't like the ilght patch on Barney's cheek. It looks like he has a skin condition which he doesn't, C&C solicited

I take it as a "portrait", but it's too close to sepia to accept it as a valid entry. ne_nau.gif

This isn't a valid entry as the shot is not fresh. I shot this a couple of weeks ago. I won't get a chance to shoot before this weekend, I'll try to post another then. But I wanted to try duotone, which I have not done. Well, not with the Photoshop layers. One thing I noticed is that every color from yellow through red makes an image look sepia. All of the blues and cyans made the image look like a black and white. Well, that left pink, purple and green which just don't cut it for me! rolleyes1.gif I wanted something that would enhance my nephew's somber expression, so I used a dark burgundy. I'm not real happy with the outcome...I really prefer the original version. It looks burgundy in my gallery, but I have this feeling by the time it is posted in this thread it will somehow turn sepia! :D
