Eye Focus Practice

Yesterday was sensor cleaning day (my first attempt--and it was well worth the time to learn to do it). After which I needed a subject. I wanted to practice doing a better job of getting the eyes into focus. This guy had nice big eyes to focus on. When I enlarged the pic to see how it looked, I noticed a very small red mite in front of the fly's right front foot (top photo) and left front foot (bottom photo). A bonus.

Looking good - nice shots. Not sure what aperture you were using but if you are using ext tubes with 100mm macro lens try going down to F8 for optimum eye detail.

    Brian,

Thanks for the comments. I have been using f11-f16 to try to maximize DOF, so I don't have to stack yet. Will definitely give the f8 a go on the next try to see how it comes out.

Funny how even a common fly will hold ones interest for ages when your interested in shooting MACRO rolleyes1.gif

I see the little red mite.

Many people are afraid to clean their sensors, I was too for a long long time..... not any more, I do it often.

Thanks for sharing Gary thumb.gif .... Skippy :D

    Hi Skippy,
I'm getting tired of flies, but that's all that's left here now, unless you get a warm day and get lucky. They are good to practice on though. The sensor was easier that I thought. Just had to figure out the technique for the applicator. Took me two times to get it. Shooting the white background (I used the front of my dishwasher) makes it easy. Never saw the red mite till I got the photo on the computer. Not sure how Brian finds them that small. He must have vision like superman, or a really big magnifying glass (or both). Anyway, thanks for the comments.
