Ran across this interesting do-it-yourself page; lens hoods designed for specific lens and layed out in a PDF so they can be printed, cut out and used with perfect fit at a fraction of the cost of manufactured lens hoods. Lots of lenses already designed for. Worth a peak.

Thanks for the reminder. This has been covered before, but it can't hurt to "rediscover" it now and again. thumb.gif

    Material Suggestion
First time I heard about this. It's a terrific idea, but I have a suggestion based on my experience with a better bounce card. Instead of using paper, use black or any color 12"x18" foam sheets (by Creative Hands) available at Michaels. Foam sheets are light, very durable and flexible. This means collapsible lens hoods for easy storage.

I think the 2 or 3mm black foamies might actually work.

My biggest gripe with soft lens hoods is that they offer no protection to the front lens element from dings on walls, cement, cave walls etc.

Good lens hoods should keep the front lens element from ever engaging the environment.

Interesting! But how do these hoods hold in place?

Bubble gum ... or some other adhesive.

So this is why they invented sealed lenses ... :D

I experimented with the printed hoods and the best for my use were the non-petal type. I had to customize the hood slightly for a non-supported lens, so I made a "ring" that fit the front of the lens and just slipped on. Then I attached the paper hood to the ring.

I meant to transfer the design to a "foamies" material but just haven't so far. Should work fine.

The only use I have found for these hoods is to print shooting information on them, for things like different sports venues and attach them on top of the coresponding hard hood.

Sorry, while they may be cheap and quick they provide zero, zip, nada in the way of protection. There is just no replacement in my book for a good custom made hard hood.

Talking about cheap. Has anyone tried one of those
"for canon" bayonet type lenshoods from ebay?
They're probably soaked with toxins or other harmful
    chemical substances ... headscratch.gif
