Are you on a waiting list at a reputable Nikon dealer? You are not going to be able to walk into any camera store when the D3 and D300 is released next month and find them lining the shelves.
Most of us are on waiting lists. Even though my name is on a list for both of these, I suspect I may be waiting until the spring before these are in my hands.
According to Thom Hogan, the D300 release date for Japan is November 23 (he also said the US release date usually differs from the Japan release date by a few days)
EDIT: When it will actually be available to anyone who didn't pre-order is another question entirely.
Preorder sounds very, very nice,
but for finish runners from 1st to 10th places only
And better be close friend or cousin of store owner
7452nd place don't looks so nice.
D300, D70s, 10.5/2.8, 17-55/2.8, 24-85/2.8-4, 50/1.4, 70-200VR, 70-300VR, 60/2.8, SB800, SB80DX, SD8A, MB-D10 ...
XTi, G9, 16-35/2.8L, 100-300USM, 70-200/4L, 19-35, 580EX II, CP-E3, 500/8 ...
DSC-R1, HFL-F32X ... ; AG-DVX100B and stuff ... (I like this 10 years old signature :^)
I am on Robert's Camera waiting list for the d300.
They contacted me a few days ago with a shipping date of 11/28.
It sounds like they think that is a solid date.
I jumped on the preorder lists back in August- I should have my d300 by the end of november, with any luck.

One top-secret, insider tip I can offer is this: The D300 body may be an extremely hot item, but what most people don't realize is that the D300 kits (body w/ 18-135, or w/ 18-200) are usually much less in-demand, and the waiting lists for them are inherently shorter. If you've got the extra cash, you might try pre-ordering a kit, even if you don't need the kit lens- you can of course just sell the lens at near full price anyway!
