I'm sure that my PP software - Aperture - is not unique in offering a variety of "standard" cropping sizes, which include mathematical equivalents, e.g. 2X3 and 4X6. I *think* that bigger seems better based on my own side-by-side comparisons, but the difference is marginal, so is there a technically correct approach?
