Getting the whole bird in while being relatively close with a telephoto lens can be somewhat difficult. Here's one that I managed to get with 560mm handheld.

Nice one Ric. It looks like it was a wet and overcast day? What kind of bird is it? (obviously not just a "sandy")

Hi Ric, Nice shot especially for handheld. I've never seen a Sandhill around here. Just to the east (Bosgue) and southeast Arizona (Sulfur Springs) they flock by the 10's of thousands. They don't even pass by here on their way.

Nice sandy. 560mm handheld? I guess you didn't drink any coffee that morning to be able to handhold that without shake. :lift

Gee, I feel real sorry for you, Chris. (not) I've been in your neck of the woods...and it's one of the most beautiful places on earth IMO. So...it's nice to here that us flatlanders have something you don't.clap.gif

    Thanks. :D

    Bosque del Apache Sandhill Cranes
Hi Ric, Nice shot especially for handheld. I've never seen a Sandhill around here. Just to the east (Bosgue) and southeast Arizona (Sulfur Springs) they flock by the 10's of thousands. They don't even pass by here on their way.

The Sandhll Cranes and the Snow Geese should be arriving at Bosque del Apache NWR about Thanksgiving. I timed a visit there to coincide with my granddaughter's wedding and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and arrived at the Bosque on October First. Wildlife viewing was pretty sparce. I saw only one sandhll vrane, a few elk and a bunch of pheasant.

The trip wasn't wasted and was not far out of my way. At least now I know the areas I will be shooting in when I hit the Bosque in December 2008. The birds will be there and I hope to get some great wildlife shots.

By the way, there is only one RV park convenient to the Bosque: Birdwatchers RV Park in San Antonio, New Mexico. It's gravel with few amenities but it is clean and safe. The owner warned me to reserve early for my 2008 trip because she stated she is always filled up between December and January.
