Help with Flash Bracket and ETTL

Hi...

I just purchased a "DotLine" eTTL2 Digital Flash bracket and am using it with the Canon 40D and a Canon 550EX flash. My problem is that the flash will not go into ETTL mode when using the bracket. It will only shoot in TTL mode. The flash connection cord even says ETTL right on it. It has the same 5 pin contacts. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this setup or may know what I'm doing wrong. The flash will still trigger but it seems that there is no communication between flash and camera beyond that.

    Ok....
    Wow...37 views and no responses leads me to believe I'm really missing the boat here.

    Let me rephrase the question.

    Is it possible to use the ETTL functions of a flash (Canon 550Ex) while having it mounted off camera on a flash bracket?

    That really depends on the cable......I am one of those will buy and use a ton of after market items....EXCEPT cables that are to communicate to my camera .....Unless the mfg'er of the cable will give me a written notarized statement guaranteeing it will work exactly as the one from the camera mfg'er and there had better be at least a 75% savings on price......so far all my communication type cables have been from the camera mfg'er and this was from my days of shooting film.......now for simple cables, yeah I'll go off brand generic.

    Oh yeah and I think Canon makes a wireless piece...STE-2 or something just for that purpose also....not shooting canon I really don't have any real idea................

    1 last thing...37 views and no response is nothing......I have had several hundred views and no responses.....just means that up to that point no one had an answer or they were off investigating for an answer for you....be patient :-}}

    Canon makes a Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 that allows you to use an ETTL flash off the camera. I have one and it works flawlessly. They also make an Off Camera Shoe Cord 3 that allows you to use an ETTL II flash off the camera. The ST-E2 is part of the Canon wireless system that allows you to manage more than one ETTL (II) flashes in two groups. It is placed on your hot shoe and wirelessly communicates with other Canon flashes (420/430/550/580EX types).

    I hope this helps some.

    I think the Canon OC-E2 flash coord you are talking about has the
    same capabilities as the OC-E3 coord. The later is only a few
    months on the market and just adds better build quality and
    weather sealing to the original one. I just got one, and it works
    just great.
