IR and Full Color composite
Sometimes the "right" thing to do is whatever it takes to achieve a certain look or convey a certain feeling.
I found this rather unusual marker and headstones in one of the local cemeteries:
There are ways to improve the shot, but it just lacks strength.
Here is the shot desaturated to show how the gray maps out. At least the marker is light against dark (kinda):
So what does IR do for the shot?
I like the IR version better, but now the background vegetation is lighter, kind of the opposite of what I wanted. So I created a composite, using the full color grayscale as a "darken" blend. The final effect:
I think the light foreground and dark background work well in this image and I was looking for a very contrasty image which was better from the IR layer, but the darker background came from the layer derived from the full color image desaturated. I also got more obvious detail in the forground, to give it a reason in the image.
