CNAME change - how long?

Greetings:
I had my domain name provider create a CNAME registration that pointed photos.ultrasomething.com to smugmug.com... this was 6 days ago, and my smugmug pro account (ultrasomething.smugmug.com) still won't let me set photos.ultrasomething.com as my custom host name. Your site says to "be patient" but this seems like a really long time? My experience is that 48 hours is the maximum amount of time for this sort of thing to propagate through the internet?

I guess I was a victim of being "too patient." I contacted my DNS provider and they admitted that they had, indeed, screwed up the CNAME registration. All is well now. Thank you.
