I Love Flight Shots

Hi You'll wave.gif

The one birds do well besides eating is flying. Naturally thats also one of the toughest shots to get. My kit of the D100 and the 80-400VR lens was not the best at getting flight shots but I managed to get a few keepers out of a few thousand attempts. I can't wait until my D2H arrives so I can try again with a better suited camera.

and a Wood Stork

BTW this is my first picture post here from my new Smugmug web page.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Great shots. Great page. Lotta birds too. The only place I saw so many birds together was in Zambia I believe. And I know everything about being limited by gear: it goes without saying that with my 200mm reach on my 828, my camera was more suited for bigger game than tiny birds. :D
enjoy being here while getting there

I love the detail in the first one, Harry. And I like the last bird, do I know that bird?

I missed the flight shots yesterday. I couldn't have gotten them no matter what with the ISO on 200, I did capture some, but speaking of soft.........

Good shots! I am not doing birds today. NOT NOT NOT

Am stoppping off downtown for the chal and that is going to be a fast stop, I hope, I am beat. One reason my mind is going, too much to remember, my back hurts, my legs hurt, the dogs are beginning to love my husband better than me. They see him.

I was doing the Challenge yesterday, then the birds, then landscapes. How many people here are doing all that? Well I am learning something, I hope. And each time I usually remember to use one thing I learn and forget the rest.

I love your flight shots. Did I just learn now, from what you said, that it is the fault of my equipment that I am having trouble getting the flight shots?

    hehehe,

I like the first one best of all, Harry. Must be hard to get a good shot of a bird in flight. Everything needs to be right at the exact moment when the bird's in a good 'pose.' Framing, focus and exposure must be a bear. You should enjoy your new machine gun when you get it. naughty.gif

    Excellent as usual Harry ^5
The first one is killer!! thumb.gifthumb.gif

As you were starting to dislike me for getting the Green Heron flight shot, I am getting upset with you for getting all these side views, instead of butt views :lol You're making me look bad buddy......lol

Seriously, a very nice series ^5 Don't see many wood stork pics. Kewl looking bird.

Love that elephants shot. Thanks for the comments. I remember trying to shoot some wildife with my 717 and B-300 Tele-extender. Not very easy.

I love the first one best. Great flight capture! Although it's action, you can still see all the details on him. I love their soar pose too. thumb.gif

The third would be a great shot if it was a tad sharper.

I missed around 80 flight shots yesterday:cry They ain't easy.

No its not the fault of your equipment when you miss a flight shot. It is the fault of the equipment when I miss a flight shot. rolleyes1.gif

    Hey Sid,

For me getting flight shots is an ongoing lesson in dealing with frustration. You have to make changes in your exposure settings on the fly and then you need to lock focus on the sucker fast. I can't wait tp get the D2H out in the field.

Thanks Heidi glad you liked the shot. The "softness" on the 3rd shot is from noise reduction. I had to bring out some detail in the shadowed areas and then I had to use Noise Ninja to deal with the resulting noise.

Harry, another outstanding set of pictures.

I really wish I had the time to devote to getting better flight shots. These
    are great.

    Hey Jeff,

Thanks. I like the 80-400 but on the D100 its focusing is sloooow. I hear that it does better on the D2H.
