print quality consistency

I had some prints made using truecolor and they didn't look perfect to me. I tweaked one of the faces in Photoshop (family portrait of four people) and printed it using truecolor again. This time the print was noticeably softer and the colors were off. There were several other prints redone with minor adjustments to one area that looked much different.
Is there a way to get more consistency with the prints or am I expecting too much? I hadn't compared two of the exact same prints done at different times before. I spend a lot of time getting things "just right" in PS and don't like to see things come out different each time a print is made.
What are other's experiences?
Thanks for any insights and explanations,
Sam
