Crop Factor

Afternoon Folks,
I have a question about the crop factor. No, not the usual customary 1.5 or 1.6 crop regarding the aps size sensor compared to 35mm, but rather the aps size sensor compared to medium format. If a 50mm lens on a digital camera is equivalent to 80mm on a 35mm camera, what would the 50mm equivalent be on a medium format camera ? Just curious. Thank you.
Have a good afternoon :D
Jim...

Where the 35mm format is a standardized 24x36mm image size, medium formats run from 6x4.5cm through 6x9cm, so the answer depends upon which medium format system you want to discuss.

6x6 medium format cameras typically used an 80mm lens as "standard", so a 50mm lens on that system would be described as a moderate wide-angle, kinda like a 35mm lens on a full-frame 35mm system or the field-of-view of a 24mm (or so) on a 1.6/1.5x crop camera.

Ziggy, medium format "normal" focal length ranges from 75mm to 120mm or so don't they, when considering 645, and all the way up to 6x9cm?

Kind of like a somewhere between 45mm and 60+mm on a full frame 35mm SLR?

What is a "normal" focal length for 4x5 inch and 8x10 inch view cameras then?

Thanks Ziggy. That explains it thumb.gif I see a lot of medium format cameras for sale with an 80mm lens , so I kinda thought that was the norm, based on the 6 x 4.5cm 'standard'.
As to the 4 x5 & 8 x 10 formats, I would imagine something like a 150mm would be the equivalent of a 'standard' lens.
    Have a good day :D

    Thanks for elaborating PF. thumb.gif

The generally accepted "normal/standard" lens for 4"x5" is 150mm, for 5"x7" is 180-210mm and for 8"x10" is 300mm (or so). The bigger problem is that in large format the lens needs to be chosen for the application. If you need to use the tilts, swings and lifts/drops of most large format cameras, the lens needs to cover the image plane with a much larger "cover circle" than a lens used without camera articulation.
