Tried the Nikon D3 today and...

I was blown away...I currently have a D200 and luv it...b ut...

Headed on down to the photography show today and was hoping Nikon would have the new D3 and D300 on display...They didnt disappoint..

First I tried the D300 and it was definitely nice...But then I tried the D3 and let me tell you it was pretty incredible..I know the price is alot more than my D200 so not apples to apples. But that thing flat out rocked...I was shooting at ISO 6400 no worries..at ISO 1600 where I would never use my D200 unless I had to the noise wasnt even there ! At least on the LCD..

The highspeed mode almost scared me at 9fps. The new 14-24mm wide angle appeared to be distortion free at the wide end..

So the only thing that really sucks for me is that my HUGE investment in DX 2.8 lenses will only work in crop mode..

But I will be seriously considering stepping up to this full frame beast of a camera early next year..

Cheers

Dave

Did it exceed your expectations? And is it highly responsive?

In the US, D300 started shipping this week and the D3 next week.

Nikon Japan has confirmed and said US dates are the same as Japan. D300 dates were spot on and no reason to believe the D3 will be different.

    Release Notes
Nov 17--In the US, D300's should be headed to dealers on the 21st, meaning that a few lucky folk will have a happy Black Friday (another vague reference I need to explain to International users: the first shopping day after the US Thanksgiving holiday is referred to as Black Friday because it's considered to be the day that the average retail businesses' profits go from the red to the black for the year; it's also typically one of the highest volume retail shopping days in the US). The D3 should follow a week later. I expect both to sell out in the first shipments, so if you're not already on a wait list, you may be waiting a long time for a camera
    .
First US shipments won't actually have Capture NX in the box, only the registration number you'll need to enter after you download the trial version from the NikonUSA Web site. This should change with subsequent shipments so that the CD will be in the box.
The 24-70mm f/2.8G AF-S lens is already shipping in the US, and the 14-24mm should be available shortly.

Up here in Canada I have been told by the Nikon rep that I should be able to buy it mid to late Jan 08...

That gives me approx 2 months to liquidate the D200, 12-24 and 17-55 2.8 gear...

I was told that my 70-200 2.8 VR should work fine on the D3. Can anyone confirm this ? I forgot to ask while I was at the show...

I know one things for sure, having tried the D3 with the 17-55 lens, I have no desire to use that thing in the cropped mode. Just feels like I am missing the big picture when you see how much is masked off in the viewfinder..

    Cheers

The 70-200/2.8 VR will work fantastic on a D3...it's not a DX lens.

Exactly it is a Film/Digital lense. You will find that you are down to its base magnification istaed of the 1.5x increase.
    I shoot therefore Iam.
