How to get eMail Notification of New Posts

I know it depends on the system used to run the site, but is it possible to create a feature that allows me to have an e-mail notification that someone has replied to a thread that I have not contributed to.

Often there are technical threads that I cannot warrant posting in, just to get the notification to be able to follow it. Another site, using pHpBB 2.0.11 has an active box to "watch this topic for replies"

In any thread, you can select 'Thread Tools->Subscribe to this thread'
