Harry, you have no idea of the nightmare that "available lighting" gave me.

Balcony House never receives any direct sunlight because of it's placement and orientation in the cliff wall. Therefore, all light entering the area is either reflected and/or refracted. Since I didn't shoot any film, I'm not sure whether I would have had the same phenomenon or not, but would suspect that I would have.

When looking at the scene with the naked eye all the colors looked fine. However, the camera saw an entirely different scene and set of colors which I couldn't see. Balcony House definitely puts forth a challenge for available light photography.

Wouldn't the left side of the attach photo give one nightmares? :grim :yikes

...but it was all I had to work with.

Tim, I'm lucky in that I work for Fiddle Back Racing (NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series - Toyota #66, driver: Todd Bodine) and do a lot of their race and promotional photos. That carries me to races all over the country and gives me plenty of opportunities to explore the many national parks. ...plus an understanding wife who puts up with my travels.

Of course I do treat her occasionally. Last year she flew out to Las Vegas prior to the race there and we did Yosemite, Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks. This year we are going do do the Keys and the Everglades after the last race of the year in Homestead, Florida. We also hope to get over to the Dry Tortugas NP (70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico) as well. Dry Tortugas is the home to Fort Jefferson and was used as the prison where the supposed Lincoln assination conspirators were imprisoned at the end of the Civil War.

The lighting challenges of the Cliff dwellings can be very challenging. I have several frames of the Gila cliff dwelings that I am not going to post because of that.
You will enjoy Fort Jefferson. In early light it is a photographer's treat - particularly if you are a Civil War history buff. I have some sides in a box somewhere from my trip to Ft Jefferson years ago. Be sure to post yoour pictures from Ft Jefferson. Are you flying over or going by boat?

If we have time, we will take the boat. Personally, I wanted to charter a sailboat out of Naples and sail it there myself and just anchor out for about a week and visit the different places with a dinghy. That's not too practical since we also want to do the Everglades and the Keys and it would just be too time consumming via sailboat.
