I placed my order on 8/24 about 6 days ahead of you. Lots of folks who pre-ordered at Ritz got e-mails saying that Nikon had shipped the D300s to Ritz and that as soon as it was received they would be shipping the D300s out to us.

If you didn't get that e-mail I would say that you're not in the first shipment and will have to wait for the second shipment. If you're impatient check out your local stores and if they ahve them cancel your Ritz order. I could have gotten a D300 today from my local store if Ritz hadn't already
shipped my D300 out.

Problem solved. I just ran down to the mall and bought one off the shelf at my local camera store. Same store I bought my D200 and 18-200 in march of 2006 when everywhere else was sold out and back ordered. And, to lessen the sting of sales tax, they threw in a $100 worth of gift certificates to an area restaurant. Something else this store had that Ritz didn't offer was the really nice guy behind the counter who invited me to attend a meeting of his camera club if I'd like.

I won't hold a grudge against Ritz - even though I felt slighted because I know that folks who placed their order after me are already getting their cameras - and when I emailed them they said that they didn't even know when they were getting their shipment from Nikon. If I were buying something for which the tax bite were bigger I might have more patience.

It worked out for the best - I got to support the local guys again. If had known that I could walk into a store and buy one off the shelf on the day of their release, I wouldn't have bothered with the whole pre-order thing.

I wont bore you with ISO3200 pictures of my kitchen counter; cat; and book case in poor light.

Congrats on the camera and for being the first D300 owner I know who hasn't posted a lousy ISO 1600 shot of their cat or their living room or their cat in the living room. clap.gif

I'm glad you guys are getting the D300. I am still waiting on the D3. Any word on them yet??? Hopefully they are as plentiful as the D300. According to B&H the D300s are in stock so they must have received a good supply.

When I get one I will try to go out and get Harry a photo of a squirrel. I hear he loves those more than cats:D .

Im waiting on a D3 also but there's no way they are going to be as plentiful as the D300s. Nikon was aiming for production of 60,000 D300s a month and 8000 D3s a month.

I'll have my D300 Monday and I'll expect the D3 somewhere between April and July.

Thanks - I did play with it a little last night and although I like everything about it so far (no surprise), I was surprised to find that the sensor has two bad pixels. So, I'll be making an early morning trip back to the store tomorrow to see if I can exchange it for another d300 in their stock (if they haven't sold them out).

Impressive set of shots. I shot with my D300 yesterday and was quite pleased with its handling. The focusing was very quick and accurate (from what I can see on the LCD).

Once I finish downloading Capture NX and figure out how to use it I'll post some pics.

Thanks Harry (I resisted the cat pic I did have!). I was quite pleased with the camera. Harry, what focus mode should I put this in for shooting birds and BIFs?

Didn't you get NX with the camera? I got it in Japanese, so I'm gonna have to download the English version too.

I'm still experimenting with the focusing. I used the normal frame with 11 points but one of the folks I was shooting with got good results using 21 points. I'm using Pattern 1/Closest Subject for my Group Dynamic AF right now. However this all will probably change a tad once I read the manual and talk to some other users.

cheap shipping take 6 days, but it's cheap [sort of] ne_nau.gif

Please post more, guys - thanks.

Most of the "problems" I've seen have been with shooters reporting problems with their matrix metering and it "blowing out" highlights. From what I saw they were shooting in aperture or shutter priority and were not making EV adjustments.

I'm sorry but if you are going to shoot that way you have to make EV adjustments. They seem to expect matrix metering to handle the scene w/o any assistance from them.

Looks as you got extra list of D300 problems :cry

I read about AF problems [such 1D3]
and even proper Nikon lenses mounting !

Let's go read more fresh reviews.
I'll try to find something positive.

I'll try to find something positive.

I have yet to find one D300 user having focusing problems. I shot with 3 other folks who were using the D300 on Saturday and no one had any such problem. On the Nikon Cafe one user had a bad camera that was replaced the next day (problem solved) other than that no one has reported any problems. As for proper lens mounting I have yet to see any reports of that among the many D300 users I have communicated with.

If you need to find something positive you have to have blinders on because on the forums I've visited the satisified users have been the vast, vast majority.

Anytime a new camera is released there are a vocal few who get their jollies off by badmouthing the new release. There may be 2,000 positives about the camera but they willl find one negative and beat that to death.

You got a list? Show a link. Otherwise, seriously, stop dishing dirt you don't back up.

If you need help finding a positive review (Laughing.gif), here's one of many, though this is mainly a comparison with D2X.

Let's keep it civil. He wasn't "dishing dirt" merely reporting some of the stuff he's seen. Any time a new camera comes out a certain amount of hysteria accompanies it.

The D300 reviews and some objective testing should be forthcoming soon.
