Looking at a SmugMug style gallery you could have maybe 20 thumbs and one
main photo, that alone is a 21 count and statcounter only counts one page
load.
And the additional trouble with statcounter is even when you click thru all the other pages in that same gallery - it's still just one hit!! :cry
Journal type galleries record all hits, even individual images on same page (as statcounter used too 'back in the day' for ALL galleries - the culprit is the 'smugmug style' galleries...)
Pay particular attention to #P-5-12 it means its a marker on a same
webpage and there is no physical different webpage.
Because of the design of your webpages, there will be only one webpage
recorded. Let me know if you have more questions.
Sincerely
Tarak
StatCounter Team
NOTE: The above response took approx. one month to finally get after repeated pleas to check per my request within galleries... this makes it clear as John points out (above) that it's within the smugmug style of gallery as being the cause...

Hopefully Lee can get to this once the new cart bugs are worked out...
I'd settle for the smugmug stats to be cumulative (and retroactive from my signup date) rather than resetting each month as a temp. fix in the mean time...
Hmmm, Statcounter still appears to not be messed up on Smugmug. I was really hoping that after BigWebGuy's post in April that things were going to improve.
So, I just set up a new account for a non-profit. I put a StatCounter tracker on the page using the code they currently auto-generate and tell me to put in the page. I uploaded a bunch of galleries, sent out an email announcing them and the masses came to view them. According to StatCounter, there were about 1000 hits. If I go to the Smugmug stats and add up the hits on M, L, XL, XL2, XL3 and original (which should be about how many images got clicked on in the Smugmug view), it adds up to 12,116 (12x higher than StatCounter reports). Hmmm, it looks like the current version of StatCounter code doesn't yet work with Smugmug's Ajax pages.
I'd really like to know whether you support StatCounter or not. Because you do all this ajax image load stuff, it will probably take a concious effort on your part to support a specific set of tracking programs. If you don't support StatCounter now, is there a list of supported tracking programs that you test and will keep working and will fix any time they break?
like i said in my earlier post, we do have code that looks for statcounter on the page and updates per image view on an ajax gallery. We will provide a more robust solution for trackers in the future. I'm sorry i havent had the chance to update our statcounter support for their new code, we've been a little busy. :whip

I'm glad you will look at it at some point, but it's been broken for several months now.
I'm looking for something that works now and is something that you will regularly test going forward (so it will keep working). Are there any services similar to StatCounter that you officially support today?

Hi John, yeah it doesn't work as it had worked. We don't make promises that we'll always support Statcounter - but we are trying to keep up with it as Lee said. But he's much I hope we can get SC to work with SmugMug. GA works, do you use that?

So GA works now. Is it "officially supported" such that you'll keep it working in the future? Or is it pot luck and who knows what will work in the future? Or you just haven't ever really thought about how to handle this and what to promise your customers in this regard?
I'm not a serious web business, but I would think that any serious web business would want to gather this kind of info on their site and would like to know what is officially supported so it doesn't break on them and so they don't have to change when it does break?

so, we dont officially support any tracking sorta thing. People hacked it in as they do many things.
When we went to smugmug ajax, many threads on dgrin popped up with people asking why their external stats were wonky, so we added the code. (old statcounter was a real PITA too...their new code looks much easier to manipulate)
Again, like i said earlier, we're gonna "officially" support some trackers in the future and when we do, we'll stay up to date with them.
That being said, we use google analytics for our own site so its in our best interest to keep that up to date.
But Google analytics isn't real time, and you can also not track hits on a image-to-image basis. For example, in Statcounter, you can see that a certain IP is going from image to image, and you can track the "flow". In Google Analytics, I have not yet found a report which will show me someone's flow, from image-to-image, on a linear time line.
Please let me know if I am missing something. Hell, Analytics wont even show what a certain IP has been clicking on.

I agree. That is exactly the StatCounter view that I use all the time. I want to see the click track of individual people.
Maybe this will help - see my post#'s 8 & 9 in this thread for symptoms...
post # 14 for statcounters response to my inquiry and so far from my site anyway the smugmug journal style pages register all the hits as previously -
its the smugmug style galleries that don't (re ajax?)
Got two sites, here and here that both are only showing the initial gallery link.
All galleries in Smugmug style. The first does show popular photo thumbs
occasionally.

ok, allen and rich. I think i have yours sorted. you are using counter_xhtml.js instead of counter.js. The custom code we have looked for counter.js.
Statcounter, in their infinite wisdom, uses the exact same javascript for counter.js and counter_xhtml.js so there's really no reason to name them differently.
Should be fixed on the site shortly.
John, your sites that i've found have counter.js so still waiting on an example from you.

Hi!
I do see what you mean. Multiple webpages will not be recorded because its
a single page.
When one visit http://rich56k.smugmug.com/gallery/2925281_qpyK3 amd go to
next, 3rd page etc you note the URL and you see its
http://rich56k.smugmug.com/gallery/2925281_qpyK3#P-5-12

Lee,
Could the smugmug stats be modified to run as an ongoing (visible!?) cumulative counter?
And ideally be set to go retro from each users start date?

here's a smugmug style that doesn't register (just the entry - not pageloads or images - click thru multiples and see)

here's a journal style that works fine

seems like it delayed in the past.
