Yet another Monitor question...

Okay, one of my 204B's just died.... I CAN'T Stand to work on a single screen, at least not a single 20" one!

So my question.... If you had $500 to spend on a monitor (for photo work of course) what would you buy?

I may end up selling this one in a few months, I am budgeting for a 24-30" SINGLE monitor in Feb. (I am currently leaning towards the Dell 30" HC.)

Anyway, thanks for your input!

I found a 20" Apple for $479... Is that the best available in that price range?

Mike I would purchase this monitor and in fact am going to do so tomorrow. Quality monitor at the right price in my opinion and most people seem to like the results for photo editing.

Here are also a couple other links that I have found very informative in regards to monitors. The second is mainly for searching monitors and then it will tell you what kind of panel it uses. Hope these help.

Thanks Aaron, I was looking at that very model earlier this morning. How big of a difference is there between S-IPS (Apple 20") and S-PVA (HP 24"). The Apple is cheaper, but smaller, and I hear S-IPS is the best panel type. The HP is larger, more money, and has a S-PVA panel, which I am sure is good, but compared to S-IPS, will I be able to tell a difference?

I have to say the HP has the same horizontal lines of resolution as my remaining 204B, so that is a plus. (Items won't change dimensional size as I move them back and forth, right?)

Mike I wish I could answer your questions but I am far from an expert when it comes to monitors. From my research S-IPS panels are suppose to be the best but also come with a pricetag especially in the 24" size.

I currently have a 19" Samsung that is a TN panel so this will be a step up for me either way. For me personally the size is important and I don't want anything smaller than a 24" which basically eliminates S-IPS panels. Others may disagree but to me it is not worth the 2-3x price difference for the S-IPS panel.

I guess in the end you have to weigh size vs panel vs price.

    I just bought a 21" Samsung 215TW for $360 (after rebate: $460 - 100). It got great reviews for photo-editing. I'm happy with it :D

Newegg has a Viewsonic VP2030b 20" LCD for $420 right now. This is my main photo editing monitor (a VP19 viewsonic for my second screen) and it's a gorgeous monitor. Sharp, colors are spot on (it's calibrated) and just all around nice. It has portrait or landscape rotation and software that automatically changes the view when you rotate it.

I work on an apple cinema display at the ol' day job and actually prefer my viewsonic. But the Viewsonic may just be specced better due to the cool specs (and graphics card) of my home-build machine.

i got a dell fpw2005 last year for christmas and so far its done me pretty well. i edit film along with photographs and it has worked quite well for both mediums. im no tech-ie, but it seems, to at least my eyes, that when i print photos, the colors are pretty spot on to what i see on my screen.
