Hi everyone, I am looking to get a small, easy to carry Point & Shoot to complement my Rebel xTi. Any suggestions? Looking for good image quality of course.

No immediate advice but i would def look at any of the new small pocket cameras that are water proof to 10 feet. I saw one last week & it would be great to jump into the surf with.

    Thoughts:

Lens width: some start at 28, most at 36

zoom: 3x to 18x, you can get it

    viewfinder: do you want one?

manual control: as much or as little as you desire

size: ultra compact glorified credit card or near-slr sized beast

batteries: rechargable AA's or proprietary lithium ion

viewfinder: do you want one? - not necessary

manual control: as much or as little as you desire -prefer some controls, but goal is to be quick, easy to use

size: ultra compact glorified credit card or near-slr sized beast - looking for smaller, this is to complement my rebel

batteries: rechargable AA's or proprietary lithium ion - prefer AA

Tough to place those preferences together. The Canon A series is relatively small and takes AA batteries, but the wide end is usually around 35mm equiv. I have a great Fuji that takes AA batteries and has 28mm wide end, but it's almost as big as a rebel with a kit lens. There are several ultra compacts (Canon SD series, Panasonic, Olympus) that have the 28mm wide end, but all have LIon batteries. If you go over to dpreview, they have a search tool that lets you compare cameras with features that you want

ultra compacts generally are L-ion, not AA. AA takes more space.

I forgot to ask about IS. I find it very helpful, others may or may not.

The Panasonic Lumix ultra-compacts seem to have a good reputation, 28mm-102mm zooms Leica IS lenses, good IQ, and take SD cards, which you may already have.

There is a canon SDxxx model that is 28-100 as well, similar feature set. I think it is the SD800, not entirely sure.

I really like my Canon A710 which is now the 720.

AA batteries, 2.5 screen, 6X zoom, viewfinder and manual override.
What more could you ask for?

If image quality is the top priority for your point and shoot. I'd recommend the fuji f40fd or a f20. Fuji f31fd would be even better but they have recently been discontinued. If you do some research, fuji's sensor really has low high ISO noise and much better IQ than any other point and shoot I can think of.
