I just sent the box containing the Tamrac Adventure 9 back to Amazon. I thought it would be a great option, but I soon realized its limitations (only due to size, not build quality).

So, I'm back here asking for some help.

In January I am traveling to Northern Uganda (almost to Sudan...really, really remote and some rough roads to get there) and need to take the following:

1x 40D (w/grip attached)
1x 30D
24-70mm f/2.8 L
17-40mm f/4 L
70-200mm f/4 L
50mm f/1.4
430EX
15" MacBook Pro
Battery chargers, batteries, cables, memory cards, rocket blower, etc.

I am looking at the LowePro Vertex 200 AW (recommended by a friend), but I am looking for any other options that won't set me back by 200 bucks. Is the CompuTrekker AW a good option?

Anyone using anything that would solve all my problems?

Oh yeah, and it needs to fit in the overhead bin, or under the seat, and not LOOK like it weighs 30 pounds! I am also not entirely locked into a backpack, especially if a Pelican would be the better option...

Thanks for all the help...

I like the medium sized Tenba. I have the olive and black version. I looked at the LowePro line since I had a bunch of their bags, but I needed to carry a laptop AND I wanted it to be fairly manageable.

This one fits not in a typical overhead bin, but also those on the smaller regional commuter jets. A 'typical' carry-on (41") fits on a Boeing 767 or A380, but has to be gate checked for the smaller Embraer or Canadair aircraft.

I pack a laptop, 5D, 580EX II, 70-200 f/2.8 IS (including tripod mount), 24-70 f/2.8, 100 f/2, 50 f/1.8, 19-35 Sigma, 1.4x extender, tripod, off camera flash cord, battery chargers, laptop charger, cloths, and various odds & ends. It is fairly well balanced, and I've hiked around with it. But that load is heavy. Just because you CAN carry all that doesn't mean it is practical on a long distance. I mainly use it for airports and major moves and take stuff out or use other bags once I get to my destination.

    Thanks for the head's up.

Right now I am really leaning toward the Pelican 1510, as it is carry-on sized, but if they make me check it due to weight or the plane 's bins are too small, I would feel comfortable letting them stash it in the hold.

Just FYI, in case anyone comes across this thread later.

I wound up purchasing the Pelican 1514 (the 1510 plus the padded dividers) for one main reason: While the case is technically carry-on legal, you are always at the mercy of the gate agent as to whether they will allow it on board or not. This, coupled with the fact that I almost always have to fly out of my little regional commuter aiport and connect at a larger hub (where I have to gate-check my 22" roller case), means I want to be prepared in case I do have to wind up stashing the case in the hold.

I believe the Pelican provides enough security and strength and protection that if, by some unforseen reason, I have to check it, I will be able to relax, knowing my gear won't get broken. I don't think I could say the same thing if, for instance, they forced me to check my Kata R-103 or Vertex 200 AW.

So, I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

    Peace,

Nice case, but are you sure it's legal size for cabin bag ?
I have Lowepro Compu Trekker AW Plus and it's smaller
and never risked to take it as hand luggage.

    Lowepro 20x14x8.5" - 6lb
    Pelican 22x14x9" - 15lb !!

Size is one problem, weight is another !!!
I had my backpack weighted at the gate at least once
and limit was (if I good remember) 10lb ONLY !

Looks as Pelican is way overweight even empty headscratch.gif

Anyway - Best Wishes with such a great trip thumb.gif

Since it's very hard theme and it's about long international travel,
I dig it deeper a bit.

What I found isn't any good anyway eek7.gif
