Outboard LCD Monitor?

OK, I just got my new Canon Rebel XTi. Everything seems good, but I've found out to my dismay that it does not allow the LCD screen to be used as a viewfinder. The lowest price model that has this feature is the 40D, which is several hundred dollars more. The sales guy at Adorama said that there was an "outboard" LCD monitor, but couldn't put his finger on the maker or any other information.

I do a lot of macro photography of flora and fauna from a low positioned tripod and need to have more than the peek-through viewfinder to compose shots. Having this on the high end point-and-shoot that I've been using made me think that it would be available on a D-SLR, but something about the mirror/sensor means its not on the XTi. I'd guess that that same issue would keep the image from being transmitted out through the video cable, but what do i know?

If anyone has experience with this or can recommend a solution, please let me know. Everything about the package I got is wonderful, but I'm too cash strapped right now to make the step up to the 40D.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but there are very few dSLR cameras that ahve a live LCD. The most recent offerings from Nikon and Canon offer this I belive, this being the MkIII and 40D from Canon, and the D300 and D3 from Nikon.

I'll let someone more knowledgable than me get into the details of why most SLR cameras don't "feature" this.

The post above is correct. Very few DSLR carry a live-view LCD. What camera where you using before for your photography?

Also, some apparatus plugged to the video out of that XTi is not going to give you live view either. You can only play back images.
