HIIIYYYAAA!! - Kung Fu / Karate
Hello,
I was recently in a Karate Tournament (Sunday) the only thing is our school does Northern Shoalin Kung Fu so we have a tuff time winning but have a lot of fun. I took some pictures and this is my first time trying pictures at this type of even. There are some pictures of me as well which were taken by my friend Dane. I used the 50mm 1.8 and found the hardest thing was the focus issue. It was on syncro as well and I think it should have not been since they were moving around so much a lot of shots were focused on the background. Oh well. Got some fun ones.
I'll start with this picture. Its my Mom! Shes awesome, comes to all my stuff and climbs 5.9 - 5.10 on rock!
Oh and heres my mom and Elisa. One may say Elisa is not family...I would be prone to argue!
Trying a kick. Both these guys were from our school (you can tell because we were the only ones wearing black) and they had only been doing kung fu for a semester. They did great!
This was the son of one of our students. He was from a Karate school and this was his first tournament as well. He got second place!
This is pretty neat. Adam is blocking one of the guys hand with his foot and using his knee and other two hands to deflect the second.
Lets keep it above the belt gentlemen! he would later kick him square in the face. I missed it though! Doh
Two good uses of technique here. Adams been in it a hear and the other has been in for only a semester.
This is gonna hurt....
This is Rebecca she has been in it for a semester and just took first place! She gets a congratulatory hug from her son.
Bam got you first!
And heres me doing the takedown thing. This was my first time sparring the black belts and I got a knee to the face for initiation.
Here I am doing a Jumping Sidekick.
And since I don't think anyone gets a picture of me without getting an embarrasing one heres me with crap in my nose because it started to bleed all over the place.
Thats it! Next time is looking exciting!

The 50 1.8 seems to be a good choice since you can get close up to the mat. Continuous AF probably better, just as it is for soccer, football etc with lots of quick movement.
I saw one shot using flash. I was thinking that it is not allowed during fighting action.??
Another lens, the 85 1.8 would be good to get shots cropped closer to feet and hands and actual point of contact. WB needs adjustment which I am sure you can see. What ISO & other camera settings did you have set?
