Taken this morning.

HarryB are you reading? Or anyone else who has this type of experience.

Black headed birds how do you get the detail to come out in it.
Shot Raw? Over expose? both ?
I sure find it tough.

Cheers,
Tim

I love the drama in the first one, with wing extended. But I love the streamlined, cruise missle feel of the second. Great captures, both! clap.gif

    Superb shots Tim!!

Yeah, you just gotta shoot RAW so you can caapture the white feather detail. But don't overexpose - mine were just slightly under - you don't want to blow the highlights - you can recapture a stop or so then in RAW .thumb.gif

What is it? Looks about the size of a mosquito?

Very nice, and I agree re the black and white, and the stop action, the capture, etc. Is very difficult for me, I have never gotten a mosquito. I find it difficult to get the big ones.

Thanks PF I guess I should not put off buying a 1gig card and start shooting raw.

    Great shots Tim
That's wonderful the way you were able to focus on him in motion. I have never succeeded in doing that. Of course I don't have a BIG lens either. Hehe

The little devil sounds like our scrub jays. They hang around and eat all the bird seed, then move on to the dog food. The mocking birds are pretty bad too. They are mean!!

Love your bird shots in general. You do an excelent job. thumb.gif

    Hey Tim,

BIF, I like that and you get all the credit for it. Great captures, you really caught the action.

Those guys are impossible to expose for, the dynamic range between their black and white parts is just too much. I shoot RAW and expose for the white parts. I would convert two versions of the shot, one for the highlights and one ofr the shadows; copy one and paste it as a layer mask over the other copy.

It is not easy to focus correctly on the bird in rapid flight in front of a colorful contrasty background as opposed to an open blue sky. I suspect Tim can support this stement also. I don't know the focal length this was shot with, but longer glass is not always more help either.
Once again, Shakey, very nicely done!!

I wonder if a little fill flash could have filled in a little more detail in the black of the birds? Otherwise, Harry is right and it will take two images from a single RAW image, combined in layers to display all the details.

What works here, and I noticed it in Pathfinder's shots but hadn't posted yet, is the background. A bird in flight against the sky is somewhat interesting. A bird in flight against a bokeh background is infinitely better.

Your first shot is outstanding, not only bcause you made a good exposure and got a crisp focus, but also because of the lovely background that sets the bird off perfectly. Nice stuff.

But that nice contrasty background that looks so good OOF, will seduce your autofocus into focusing on it unless you are Very careful - I speak from a number of frames of experience .rolleyes1.gif

Nice shots. I haven't got any real good BIF pics (yet), I'm hoping when the
    weather gets better I can.
