What is this doing on DGRIN?

No babies, no senior shots, no "first time using a strobe" disclaimer?

This is exceptional. So many unanswered questions and unresolved ideas.

    Brilliant. thumb.gif

Haha, resolving questions, I guess, this is part of a series called F1, actually just the first one it is, because all of these were taken on the same day, about the disclamer, haha, I'm training myself (I'm such an amateur) on composition, and not carying that much on exposition for now, although I've been practicing the zone system as well, with more "casual" shots.

    My goal: Philip Lorca diCorcia.

B://, I can only see the first image, red "X"s for the following post.

But, this was laughter in a church, in Guatemala? Was this shot with film? Very interesting.

One of the best aspects of Dgrin is that we're a completely global photography community! However, it goes without saying that the official language here is English because it's a standard that the moderators can monitor.

I think it's awesome when people who speak other languages post here in English because it does take courage, but officially we should adhere to the notion that we have a common language that should be used. thumb.gif

It's pictorially compelling. But I am uncomfortable if not suspicious about both its construction and its purpose. Partly because as it is it is bare of context and history, both technical and narrational. It looks like a montage to me. The person seems to me to have cerebral palsy perhaps with mental disability. If this is so we need to know because extraordinary and tragic circumstances cannot be nonchalantly mixed with ordinary. Is it a freak show? Is it a moment of transcendence above some limiting force. Is a phase change in life being captured?

If the purpose of the image is only to generate such questions then it is possibly being more clever than just.

I am not at all certain of what I say, so concede that I might be completely astray, and if I am then I apologise in advance to the people concerned.

The existence of profound difference in life is an absorbing fact for me and I welcome responsible and sympathetic exploration of it.

Just the fact you need to ask these questions makes it a strong and compelling image.

My first impression was not of mental disability, CP or freak show - but someone who just had their hand slapped at Sunday School.

Funny, my first thought was that the kid is singing his heart out. So I'll keep that in my mind, because I really like it...

Impression is the one that counts, (before I start, I have a very bad english, it's not my native language, nor russian) and I'm really glad to see that everyone was delighted with it, and yes, it's happiness and joy, and yes, she's (a beautiful lady) part of an organization in Guatemala that takes care of kids and adults with special needs, they survive from donations only, and the only sad part of all this story is that Guatemala's government is doing nothing to help this children.

It's not a montage, and there is a transcendental force implicit in this sweet laughter as well. The picture was taken at the institution's chapel, they have a christian instruction as part of the teraphy program. That was the reason of this picture, it was not intended to present a freak show, no, because that laughter that's also is a muscular spams (what can be pretty ambiguous too) is an innocent channeling of pure love, it becomes hard to me to explain, but it's not the understanding of a dogma nor the comprehension of a protocolarian act of salvation, it was just pure joy through the feeling of acceptance, they are told that there's a God that loves them no matter what, that's always watching them, and taking care of them.

For me it was wonderful to just appreciate that, without wanting to understand it completely.

It's called F1, because it stands for help.

    Hi B://

I am delightfully stunned by the beauty of your notes. They add extra dimensions to the image, as I suggested such contextualisation would. When you are close to the circumstances you describe the risk is that you forget how unique your perspective is. Others need a bridge to be able to appreciate them. This image, however, cannot function alone. It is quite clear now that it belongs in a philosophical exploration.

Personally, I would interpret the child's response as satisfaction not with an abstract divinity but with the tangible fellowship of caring human beings. When you have experienced THAT as the genuine article, you find you have no further needs.

I would also prefer the subject not to be anonymous. This kind of documentation engages us with another life lived in extraordinary circumstances and the only way we can orient ourselves to it is through a relationship. There is a limit to the appropriateness of voyeurism.

Your technique does justice to the subject and subject matter. My congratulations!

Yes, it was shot in Guatemala, and no, it wasn't film, I would have loved it to be on medium format, but no mamiya nor hasselblad for me, haha.

The F1 photos are now visible, thanks for the comments, take care my friend :D
