Tagging for search on comp, and SM

I help coach a U14 soccer team and I can easily shoot 200-300 shots a game of the 15 players on the team. This causes a moderate mass of photos for any parents to go through to find the pics of their kid to order (4583 pictures to date, with the season almost half done), and harder for me to make the DVD slideshow that I make at the end of every year. So I am really hoping that there is some way that pictures can be tagged with a player name that is search-able on both the computer and smugmug. IE: when I am zooming/contrasting them in photoshop could I apply a tag that would carry over to smugmug? Or any other program would be just as good, I just need something...

I've looked into metadata and editors, but don't know enough about that and if it's search-able on SM or by the search on my computer (MS XP). Any suggestions?

You are looking for the IPTC Keywords field. There are a number of IPTC editors available. You can also add these keywords once the files are uploaded, though IMHO that's the more tedious way to do it.
