Taken yesterday. This pelican is just hunkering down trying to stay out of the chilly wind.

Canon 10D, 70-200 f/2.8 - taken at 1/125, f/10, 200mm.

    Hey Dixie,

Nice one. I really like the compsition on this one. That 70-200 is a real sweet lens (thephotorapher ain't too bad either).

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks to all of you. ...and Harry, I have you to thank for making me think birds now. :D ...and Lynn, thanks for the kind comments on the composition. Have you ever been walking or riding by something and the scene just cried out - take my picture? That's what happened to me with this one. There was just something about the receding pilings, the rope wrapped around one of them and the pelican trying to create a low profile which drew me in. I was trying to create a low profile also because the wind here in Alabama was pretty vicious yesterday and it had me hunkering down as well. The pelican definitely had my sympathy.

Tim, unless you are talking about the little patch of grass (I don't think that you are), the greens in the pilings come from the chemical perservative treatment they give the wood around here to make it last longer in the elements. At least it looks (and smells) better than creosote.

Thanks, Jeff. I had 15-20 feet I could move either left or right to get the exposure and this was the angle chosen based on the criteria you so nicely laid out plus the pilings moving from upper right to lower left to bring the eye down to the pelican. Because of the overcast (notice the absence of any harsh shadows), I shot at the metered reading (spot on the pelican) then two more, one at +1, and one at +2. I went with the shot at +1. The metered reading blew out the top portion of the pelican's head in the lighter area.
