What bird is this?

I asked about this in my other thread, but I think it is about to get lost cos most people have already viewed the thread. So does anyone know what kind of birds these are? This is in Japan.

I don't have a "Birds of Japan" guide but it looks like it is in the Plover family. It looks strikingly similar to a killdeer.

I think you're right Stephen. Just found this while looking for 'birds of Japan'.

I'm not sure about Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula). The heads on these look right, but the diagnostic feature is "bold black band extending around the neck". Your birds also show a very distinctive yellow eye ring, which is not present in Ringed Plover. Methinks, Little Ringed Plover is a better bet.
