although I really like this shot I have some potential suggestions for the minimalism thing.....
what if this were on a white background, and the black part was bordered by the white background and the shadow fell on the side of the white part?? does that make sense?

you're really diggin' this challenge, eh? I reckon it's right up your alley. Great suggestion
I think that's the first Drebel shot I've seen from you DJ, nice!
This isn't very good, but this is kinda what you were talking about, right df?
...is what you should use (with a reshoot for better depth of field and sharpness). This pic IS minimalism personified. Should do well in the challenge if you can rework it so that it's tack sharp throughout. The shadow works for me, too.
I like your last attempt the best, mostly because I find the angle of the ying/yang more pleasing. I think the shadow is much improved as well.
I did like the colour and texture in your very first picture, but I think it needed an object of a similar hue or colour. I think that is why your B/W shot works so much better.
But I would crop it a bit to be more like the first attempt. I'd suggest that the object needs to be larger in the frame and positioned in the bottom left corner 1/3 up, 1/3 over (rule of 3rds). Good luck with it! The new version looks nice and sharp and the shadow looks natural, too.
I like the middle one too. Don't know why, exactly, but I find the balance with the white background pleasing. Probably has to do with the rule of thirds.:):

that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! maybe take care of the hot spot on the black part of your object and deepen the shadow and I think you've got something kewl. I also like the black & white version of the wood grain background better as well! go with the one you love!

Here's a B&W version, attempting DF's idea will take some more work!

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence that you tried~
And something different.
What do you think?

I think I'm leaning towards the middle one.
