Is there any way to enable a 'one click' album download function similar to that of Picasa Web?

    Welcome to Digital Grin wave.gif

We don't have a one-button-download but have a look at these two here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=47160 or here: http://www.blackbonsai.co.uk/?n=portfolio_view&pid=37

    Hope this helps.

For logged-in users (you) - yep - AlbumFetcher.

Also SmugDav works great on Macs or PCs :)

    Thanks.
I am aware that logged in users can use Album Fetcher... but 1) I am on a Mac, 2) I am hoping the Download Album would be an option (maybe for Pro users?) to download the entire album for public users (or users with password for secured albums). One Click... generate a zip file of all the photos... and one file download. That would save SO much time.

I wonder... is there any way a web-based downloader could be built with the API?

Great question; I've been thinking about this, too. (Hi, I'm Greg, the developer of AlbumFetcher - also known as the guy who wrote AF but never responds to anyone's posts on the project thread because supporting software is hard.)

Going with something webby makes a ton of sense. First of all, it's almost inherently cross-platform. AF was written for Windows, and while Mac users are able to jimmy it onto their system with some third-party software, it's not ideal. Linux/Unix users are hosed. And even some fraction of Windows users are unable to use AF due to a cryptic low-level error I can't replicate on any machine I use. So something webby sounds great on the surface.

I think the biggest problem would be in how browsers are set up to handle downloads. I'm not aware of a single browser which will allow a user to pick a folder and then have multiple files downloaded to that folder. You have to choose a single location for a single file, and then repeat if necessary. This is why you see zip files everywhere (also for compression of course).

So in essence, I think one could write a JavaScript bulk album downloader pretty easily. The pain would be that the browser would prompt you to specify a location for each and every file.

The best solution would be for SmugMug to (optionally) offer a zip file containing all the photos from a particular gallery. This could get intense on their side, though. Imagine someone with 1,000 3MB files. In this scenario, SmugMug would have to generate a 3GB file and send it out - a potential bandwidth nightmare.

    Anyone have ideas/comments? ear.gif

don't forget the high CPU and I/O load on the servers to generate the file.
