How can you directly contact a fellow smugger..I mean, if someone is nice enough to view your galleries and leave a comment, I would at least like to email back with a 'thank you' but the comment notification comes from SmugMug and not the person, so I can't respond.

If I go to their page, I can only leave a comment on a photo....what am I missing here? I just want to say "hello and thanks"

Hi, you can leave a comment on their site, if they comment to you when they are logged - just follow the link in the comment You aren't missing anything, but maybe there's a latent feature request here for some new ways to interact - thanks!
