So I just got my Nikon SB-600 for my D80 and even after reading the instructions, I'm having some troubles and I'm wondering if anyone can help me out.

It seems to me that when I have the speedlight on, I should be able to use the D80 in Aperture or Shutter Priority mode pretty much like I normally would.

However, when I put it in Aperture mode, I can change the aperture just fine but the shutter does not automatically adjust to the new aperture. Likewise, if I'm in Shutter mode and I adjust the shutter speed, the aperture does not automatically adjust.

It almost seems as if my only option is to use it in Manual mode but I don't think that's right as the D80 is fully compatible with the SB-600.

This is my first speedlight so I'm a novice in this area. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I appreciate any thoughts...

Just played with my D50 and SB-600, basically same results. On shutter priority the aperature did not change till I went down to 1/15 then the aperature started to climb. Shutter would not go above 1/500 my max sync speed. On aperature the shutter stayed on 60 the entire range. I'll play with it on Saturday outside and see if I get the same results. I think it's just the way the ambient light and the metering system are reacting with the flash.
    Ted....
It's not what you look at that matters: Its what you see!

In my opinion, this is normal. The flash normal sync speed is 1/60s at any aperture. The flash TTL capabilities will make the flash output to adjust the light read by the camera. If you manually reduce the shutter speed, then the flash cannot sync when you reach a certain SS. This opposite is also true. Others may have better explainations as I just got my flash as well but it certainly helps to take great images!

Are you in "Standard i-TTL" mode or in "i-TTL Balanced Fill" mode? It sounds like you are in standard mode when you would rather be in balanced mode.
