My 6 year old son is in 1st grade and they recently learned what a homophone is. (2 words that are pronounced the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings)

As we go about our lives, he will suddenly pop up and excitedly say "Dad, that's a homophone!" It's really cute the innocent glee on his face -

The other day we were reading an "I Spy" book (find the apple in the picture kind of thing). The picture was a beach scene, with a sand castle and a plastic rake, hoe and bucket.

Suddenly John says "Hey! That's a homophone!"

"What is?"

He points. "Hoe. See Dad, that's a hoe."

"Yeah...um..." :huh I pause, trying to decide what to say and then he continues -

"...and you know, there's that other word, like what Santa says - Ho Ho Ho!"

Whew! Thank God he's still my sweet little boy and doesn't know that other word yet!!!:D

Happy holidays everyone!
