I'm lovin' the 40D w/ 17-55 2.8 IS!

handheld, 1/40, 2.8, 1600 (with a little noiseware applied)

I'd like to get a better grasp on a nice sepia conversion. How is this one, how could it be improved and is there a better way to do it than just using the sepia filter?

I like the conversion you did even if the sepia is very subtle. I tend to do toning in Photoshop with hue/saturation layers (colorize on).

Well I have no idea what an sp is, but how could you go wrong with such a youthfull and gorgeous subject!!!(Merry Christmas Elaine!)

Shots like this ought to help you get over the sting of switching camera systems. I am patiently waiting for that lens to become available- in stock at B&H. Doncha think that the IS is pretty wicked? Gotta love that.

As for the conversion, I think yours is very well done. This shot looks like it would be a good candidate for a LAB conversion....where you convert to LAB mode and delete all but the lightness channel. After that, if I am doing a sepia, I will convert to greyscale, and then convert to duo tone and if have not tried that.....well there are tons of color options there. I then convert back to SRGB as a final step. It sounds like a lot, but it is really just a few mouse clicks. I do a lot of BW conversions with the LAB method. Then after getting back to SRGB mode, I use those warming filters to warm them just a bit beyond BW.

    Nice shot.

Aww...you all must be softies for sepia or something! :D

Thank you, George! mwink.gif No offense taken!-

Thanks Stephenie and Lynne! Appreciate the comments! :ivar

Marina - I'm glad you like the conversion, too! Thanks a bunch! :D

Jeff - You're too sweet! iloveyou.gifrolleyes1.gif Thanks for the tips on sepia conversion...it does sound like a lot at first, but it's good to try new things.
The sting from a new camera system has been nearly non-existent. And this lens has really been fun...sharp wide open and great IS! I hope you can get your own sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the look and comments, pyry! :D

    Merry Christmas to all!

Great photo Elaine, lovin' the expression and you are quite attractive.

However, I have just one little nitpick. The top rim of your glasses on the right makes your eyeball slightly skewed. If that was planned, please disregard.

I told myself to tread lightly in the early days when giving comments and yours is my first. So in that regard, thanks for taking away my dgrin virginity. :D I don't want to rain on a parade, but it was bugging me a bit.

Hey! I'm flattered you chose to break-in with my photo! Welcome to DGrin! :D

I'm actually kinda surprised that no-one else mentioned the glasses/eye issue. I purposefully placed my glasses a bit low, so in that sense it was planned. It was meant to be a handheld, whimsical sort of shot (rather than a tripod held, planned, perfected sort of shot), so in that sense, I decided that issue didn't bother me! :D

I had first attempted to take a "normal" sp, with just a regular sort of smile, etc... It just wasn't working as I'd hoped, so I went for something a bit "cheeky" and only had to take one shot. It's one of those things where I think if I tried it again, the spontaneity would be lost, even if the glasses were "perfect." Hope that makes sense!

    Merry Christmas!

Elaine, great job on the sp, those wide angles are fun aren't they? I felt a little silly on vacation, holding the camera up facing me for a shot...but that didn't stop me!

Great expression too and it immediately reminded me of this book - Maggie Needs an Alibi

And Mitchell...what a nice compliment! First of all, digging this thread up again, and second of all, your generous words! :D Are you trying to imply that I need to change my avatar? rolleyes1.gif I actually did try one with this shot, but it seemed so small and hard to decipher, but I could be convinced to try again! :D

Looks good, and I like the sepia. My only critique is something someone else mentioned--the rim of your glasses distorting your right eye.

Little slow to reply to this one, but.......

Just a thought, but if you do a lot of conversions with the LAB method, have you created it as an ACTION yet? then it's fewer mouse clicks. I have mine saved as two actions, one that finishes it completely black and white, and one that leaves the coloring options as a layer before merging so that I can play with the options before finishing.
